The Douro Historical Train returns with 51 trips between June and October
Continuing to establish itself as one of the most reliable rail tourism options in Portugal
In 2026, the Douro Historical Train will once again run along one of the country’s most iconic railway lines, reinforcing its role as a flagship attraction for rail and cultural tourism in the north of the country. Between 6 June and 18 October, CP – Comboios de Portugal is organising 51 journeys between Régua and Tua, along the Douro line, on Saturdays, Sundays and some Wednesdays.
Hauled by a 1400-series diesel locomotive, painted in its original colours, the Douro Historical Train comprises five historic coaches from the early 20th century, with a total seating capacity of 254. Over the course of about three hours, passengers travel back in time, against the backdrop of a UNESCO World Heritage Site landscape, in a unique experience that combines railway heritage, cultural entertainment and direct contact with the Douro region.
The journey begins at Régua station at 3.00 pm, with a welcome that includes a musical performance and a Port welcome drink. During the journey, there is music on board and strategic stops in Pinhão and Tua, where passengers can meet local producers, sample and purchase regional products, and visit sites showcasing the heritage and culture of the Douro, including the Tua Valley Interpretation Centre. The return journey to Régua begins at 5.07 pm, with arrival scheduled for 6.22 pm.
The 2026 edition strengthens links with local organisations and stakeholders, placing the Douro Historical Train at the service of the region’s economic and tourism development. This commitment is reflected in the presence of local producers at the stations and in the integration of the railway service into a broader tourism offering that showcases the Alto Douro Wine Region, Pinhão railway station, and the Tua Valley.
Tickets cost €60 for adults and €32 for children aged 4 to 12, with special group rates available; they can be purchased from ticket offices or cp.pt.
The Douro Historical Train continues to establish itself as one of the most consistent rail tourism offerings in Portugal, promoting the train as a sustainable way to explore the region and strengthening the CP brand’s reputation.
