Energy Transition
Towards a Carbon-Free Future
In 2025, 100% of the electricity contracted for traction came from renewable sources.
Electric traction accounts for 87% of all kilometers traveled annually.
81.4% of the electric fleet allows for energy recovery during braking.
Thanks to continuous technological upgrades in CP’s train fleet, energy consumption has decreased by more than 9% over the past five years.
CP has also conducted tests with HVO100 (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) in diesel engines to monitor emissions compared to fossil diesel and is assessing its suitability for wider use.
Under Decree No. 228/90 of 27 March, which regulates Energy Consumption Management for the Transport Sector, we produced implementation and progress reports that assess the state of implementation of the Energy Rationalisation Plan for CP’s trains for the three-year period 2024 – 2026, presenting information on the evolution of the fleet’s energy efficiency.
Over the last five years, CP has reduced the energy consumption of its buildings by 6.4%. CP has implemented energy efficiency measures, particularly in lighting (replacement of conventional lighting with LEDs and installation of motion sensors to control lighting), replacement of air conditioning systems with refrigerants with lower global warming potential, incorporation of compressed air compressors with variable speed drives to make equipment more efficient, and installation of solar thermal panels for hot water production.
CP periodically conducts energy audits at its facilities, in accordance with:
- Decree-Law No. 101-D/2020 of 7 December 2020 – which regulates the Energy Certification System for Buildings,
- Decree-Law No. 68-A/2015 of 30 April – which establishes provisions on energy efficiency;
- Decree-Law No. 71/2008,of 15 April – which establishes the energy consumption management system for energy-intensive companies and facilities.
