Digital Green Rail Pass Project wins award
CP – Comboios de Portugal was one of the winners at the Transport Ticketing Awards 2026, with its Digital Green Rail Pass project taking second place (the Silver Award) in the Digital Innovation category.
The awards ceremony announcing the winners took place in London yesterday.
The Digital Innovation category, in which CP was recognised, aims to acknowledge the innovative use of digital technology in ticketing, ranging from artificial intelligence tools to mobile apps and biometrics that transform the passenger experience.
Entries had to demonstrate how digital innovation had simplified access to services, improved operator efficiency and delivered measurable benefits for customers.
CP submitted the Digital Green Rail Pass, Portugal’s first fully digital national rail pass.
Given the success of this project, which focuses on an innovative, accessible, and sustainable solution that promotes a modal shift to rail, it simplifies the purchase and validation of journeys through digital authentication and reduces paper tickets, making rail transport more attractive and efficient.
The Digital Green Rail Pass is integrated into the CP app, and the pass request (whether physical or digital) is authenticated via the Digital Mobile Key.
Currently, CP’s digital channels are the primary sales channel for long-distance bookings, accounting for 72% of bookings.
It is worth noting that this pass has helped reduce CO₂ emissions in the transport sector.
The estimate is a net reduction of approximately 4,500 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year. This promotes green mobility nationwide and national and European climate targets.
“These accolades demonstrate the innovative capacity and professionalism of CP’s staff, who are ready to help the company adapt to market demands and serve customers, both through ticketing solutions that enhance the travel experience and in all other areas,” CP’s Chair Pedro Moreira said, noting that the introduction of the Green Rail Pass has reinforced CP’s commitment to sustainability and territorial cohesion, encouraging ever more citizens to choose rail transport.
Since its launch in October 2024, over 935,000 monthly Green Rail Passes have been sold, and almost 3.5 million seat reservations have been made on the Intercidades service.
The Transport Ticketing Awards is an annual event that celebrates excellence in the smart ticketing and mobility industry, highlighting the most innovative projects, initiatives and technologies.
This is an important international recognition of CP’s teams' work in this area.
It should be noted that, in 2025, the Green Rail Pass project was also a finalist at the Transport Ticketing Awards, in the ‘Best Equity and Inclusion Initiative’ category.
