A million subscribe to Green Rail Pass
Portugal's first fully digital rail pass has received international recognition
The Green Rail Pass has just reached the milestone of one million subscribers, a figure that confirms the public’s strong support for an affordable, sustainable rail transport solution that is in line with the digital transition. Since its launch in October 2024, this pass has become a key tool for encouraging train travel, contributing to a modal shift and reducing the transport sector's environmental impact.
This pass, which has been transforming mobility habits across the country, is the first fully digital national rail pass. The relevance and innovative nature of the Green Rail Pass were recently recognised internationally, with the award of second place (the ‘Silver’ Award) in the Digital Innovation category at the 2026 Transport Ticketing Awards, which recognises the innovative use of digital technology in ticketing and honours projects that simplify access to services, improve operator efficiency and generate measurable benefits for customers.
The Digital Green Rail Pass is integrated into the CP app and allows authentication via the Digital Mobile Key, simplifying the processes of purchasing, validating and using tickets.
Over 84% of bookings for this pass are already made via CP's mobile app and online ticket office. The digitisation of the pass enables a more convenient and secure experience, reducing the need for physical tickets, streamlining the booking process, and reinforcing CP's modernisation of services, in line with passengers’ expectations and best practices in the transport sector.
For the chairman of CP, Pedro Moreira, this milestone of one million subscribers represents “an unequivocal sign of public confidence in rail transport and in CP’s role as a public operator committed to more sustainable, modern and customer-focused mobility”. He also emphasised that the company would continue “to invest in improving the digital experience and the quality of its services, placing the train at the heart of the people’s mobility choices”, thanks to the innovative capacity and professionalism of CP’s staff.
Since its launch, the Green Rail Pass has recorded 3.8 million bookings on Intercidades trains, demonstrating the growing demand for rail transport as a competitive, efficient and reliable alternative for daily commutes and leisure travel within the country. In 2025, the company carried 208.2 million passengers, the highest figure this century.
It should be noted that the Green Rail Pass has contributed significantly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with an estimated net reduction of around 4,500 tonnes of CO₂ per year, which supports the achievement of national and European climate targets.
CP reaffirms its commitment to digital innovation, sustainability and public service, pursuing a strategy that values rail transport as an essential pillar of the country’s economic, social and environmental development.
