CP carries more than 100 million passengers in six months
A record-breaking number in the first half of the year
In the first six months of 2025, CP - Comboios de Portugal carried over 100 million passengers, an increase of 9.3%, meaning around 7 million more passengers than in the same period in 2024.
These results show the continued growth in demand for the services CP offers and confirm how attractive the train is as a safe, sustainable and affordable transport solution.
The increase was across the board, with the largest increase in the Regional service, where 15.3 million more passengers travelled by train (133% more than in the same period last year). Coimbra's urban trains rose by 84% and Intercidades by 48%. In terms of the highest number of passengers carried, Lisbon's urban trains continue to have the highest figures, reaching around 68 million passengers in the first half of the year. The Alfa Pendular remains firmly established in the market.
Green Rail Pass attracts passengers to the railway
Among the measures adopted to encourage the use of public transport, the Green Rail Pass, implemented in October 2024, has had a major impact on people's shift to the train, by promoting accessible and sustainable mobility for €20 a month. An example of this is the excellent results of the Regional and Intercidades services, with increases of 133% and 48% respectively in the period under review.
Between January and June 2025, more than 315,000 subscriptions were sold for the Green Rail Pass, which represents a clear commitment to promoting rail transport throughout the country. Since it came into force, more than 390,000 Green Rail Passes have been sold, a growing demand that shows the impact this ticket has had on the mobility of the Portuguese population.
In addition, more than 1.25 million bookings for journeys on Intercidades trains have been made with the Green Rail Pass.
CP promotes sustainable mobility by reopening lines and strengthening existing services
The first six months of 2025 saw the reopening of the Leixões Line and the reopening of the Mangualde/Celorico da Beira (on the Beira Alta Line) and Torres Vedras/Malveira and Malveira/Meleças (on the Oeste Line) sections, bringing train services back to the population. Also noteworthy is the extension of the Andante intermodal fare to trains running on the Vouga Line, on the Espinho - Vouga and Pinheiro da Bemposta (Oliveira de Azeméis) routes, to encourage the use of public passenger transport and promote intermodality.
As part of its ongoing commitment to modernising the public service and making it easier for passengers to buy tickets and top up their passes, CP completed the installation of 304 new vending machines in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. These machines, with new, improved functions, make life easier for customers, reducing wait times and facilitating access to essential services for their mobility.
Moreover, to promote sustainable mobility and strengthen the use of rail transport in the country, meeting the needs of the Portuguese, CP has reinforced the offer of Alfa Pendular trains since July on Saturdays and public holidays, providing more times and seats on the route between Lisbon and Porto, a service that has been in high demand.
