A Journey on the Douro Historical Train

The Douro Historical Train is just leaving.

The sun appears fearless and is beating down hot and hard. I'm very anxious. A warm breeze flows through the train windows, a calm wind that lulls. People spread out in the carriages and take their seats, waiting anxiously for the sound of departure. They are ladies and gentlemen with improvised fans, smiles on their faces, their eyes wide and attentive. Travellers preparing to receive the Douro in their hands. It is here, from Régua, that the Historical Train sets off. Greens, valleys, the river and the vineyards, a land that calls out to us and that, in the freedom of our gaze, is eternalised and becomes ours too.

I was just thinking that out the window the green sings and that, for a moment, I feel like I'm dancing with the wind. Round and round I go, from there to here, there somewhere, I don't even know, just living, travelling. In this window seat, where I find myself, I'm travelling on the tracks of a train that met in time and that, now more than ever, and so close to us, is made whole, is making its way.

‘I spend a happy life with my little song. I go from street to street selling fresh water’.

You can hear the traditional songs bouncing from coach to coach. And another and another and ... ‘Oh blacksmith, guard your daughter, don't put her in the window...’. The accordion, tambourine and drum with their rhythmic beats spin around the strings of the cavaquinho. The voices repeat the refrains that time has preserved, quatrains that are never lost, that last for lifetimes and that belong to the land. It is also in music that the journey is made, where tradition is not lacking and where the whole region is made known in the famous Régua sweets, in the glass of Port that cannot be missed, in the traditional costumes and in the people who fill every seat of this train with joy.
