Unesco heritage – Douro

The pleasure of travelling by train through the oldest demarcated wine-growing region in the world.

Getting to know the River Douro and its valley is a memorable experience that lets you appreciate the beautiful landscapes of the Upper Douro Wine Region, Unesco, classified as a World Heritage Site in 2001. Its distinctive features are its antiquity, the terraces supported by schist walls, the crossroads of traditions and cultures, and the intimate relationship between human activity and nature.

This is where the famous Douro wines and Port are made, symbols of economic, technological and cultural dynamism. The classified area crosses the districts of Porto, Vila Real, Bragança, Viseu and Guarda, served by the Douro Line since 1879: a masterpiece of Portuguese railway engineering, which crosses the territory and three sub-regions associated with wine-growing in the Douro Valley.
