The Vouga Historical Train returns in July
This outing combines railway heritage, local culture and exploring the region.
The summer 2026 edition of the Vouga Historical Train is back. Between 4 July and 29 August, there will be nine opportunities to travel aboard a train laden with memories. This outing once again highlights the link between railway heritage, culture and regional development.
The programme takes place on Saturdays and offers more than just a journey. It is a complete experience on Portugal’s only narrow-gauge railway line still in service. The route runs between Aveiro and Macinhata do Vouga, with a stop at Águeda, featuring cultural activities and entertainment whilst allowing passengers to discover the region.
Passengers are invited to travel in historical carriages from the last century, all of which entered service before the 1930s, pulled by a 9000-series narrow-gauge diesel locomotive (in service since 1975), a symbol of a period of technological transition in the national railway network, preserved to provide an authentic experience.
The itinerary includes various activities along the route like on-board entertainment, a welcome in Macinhata do Vouga, featuring a market selling regional produce and a guided tour of the local Railway Museum. There is also a stop in Águeda, where participants can explore the town’s urban and cultural heritage, including the artistic atmosphere associated with AgitÁgueda, an event held in July.
Departing from Aveiro at 1.45 p.m. and scheduled to return at 8.07 p.m., this experience has been designed to offer a day of leisure for people of all ages.
Over recent years, the Vouga Historical Train has established itself as a distinctive tourist attraction for CP, helping to showcase the country’s railway heritage and promote regional tourism through partnerships with local authorities and organisations, notably Águeda Town Council and the Macinhata do Vouga Parish Council.
Tickets are now available through CP’s usual channels. Further information is available at cp.pt.
