UNESCO Heritage – Tomar

A journey to the ancient home of the Knights Templar

In 1983, UNESCO declared the Templar Castle and Convent of the Knights of Christ a World Heritage Site. This is a symbol of the Renaissance and of eight centuries of Portuguese and Western history. The castle, built on a Roman religious site, was founded in the 12th century and represents a monumental ensemble of great architectural richness. This timeless place crosses eras and different artistic styles, ranging from Romanesque to Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance and Baroque.

From the Convent of the Knights of Christ and its Manueline Casa do Capítulo sacristy, the famous Janela do Capítulo stands out. Adorned in carved stone as if it were lace, it contains elements and symbolism that represent the mystique of the Spiritual Cavalry and the mission of the Order of Christ.

Travelling through Portuguese history is synonymous with visiting Tomar. Bathed by the River Nabão and once the seat of the Order of the Knights Templar, the city takes you on an interpretive tour of its medieval town and picturesque historic centre, as well as discovering all its artistic and gastronomic riches, including the Fatia de Tomar.

Between narrow streets and pleasant green spaces, there are the 39 hectares of the Mata Nacional dos Sete Montes - the city's main park, which surrounds the castle walls.
