Come and visit the National Railway Museum, which tells the story of more than 160 years of the railways in Portugal.

Did you know that King Pedro V presided over the very first train journey between Lisbon Santa Apolónia and Carregado on 28 October 1856? Did you know that the first train was built in England? And that it played a crucial role in connecting people? It’s true! Important messages were communicated through the telegraph systems available at the stations... 

Come and see the engines, coaches, saloons and wagons. You can even try driving a locomotive in the Railway Driving Simulator or ride on the mini-train, which runs around the National Railway Museum.

  • The Royal Train, which transported Portugal's Royal Family; 

  • The Presidential Train, which transported Portugal's Heads of State.
