CP opens its historical archives to the public

Event part of International Archives Week 2025

The Historical Archives of CP-Comboios de Portugal will be open to the public on 9 and 11 June. The initiative, which is part of International Archives Week 2025, organised by the International Council on Archives, has this year's theme ‘Accessible Archives: Archives for All’ and consists of visits to the Historical Archives, allowing visitors to learn about the history of CP and the Portuguese railway sector.

Participation in this event is subject to registration by emailing cultura@cp.pt. Visits can be made between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. and between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. at the company's headquarters at Calçada do Duque, no. 20, in Lisbon.

The aim is to publicise the digital preservation work carried out by CP, to ensure greater access to the Archives for everyone.

It is worth noting that the CP Archives preserve nearly 170 years of railway history in Portugal.

The documents held there, preserved by legal requirement, serve as an effective support for CP's management and a valuable source for studying business history and the railway sector, while also being an integral part of the country's heritage.

There are studies, minutes, contracts, timetables, annual reports, posters, photographs, films and technical documents that bear witness to national policy, the technical evolution of the system, the services provided to the country by the railway, the different modes of organisation of the sector, as well as the workers' living conditions.
