CP bolsters its environmental commitment

Consolidating progress on sustainability by 2025.

The year 2025 marked a significant step forward on CP – Comboios de Portugal’s path to sustainability, with tangible results in the environmental sphere that reflect the collective effort of the entire organisation.

CP strengthened its position as a key player in sustainable mobility in Portugal, driving the energy transition and reducing the environmental footprint of its operations. It is worth noting that around 77% of the energy consumed now comes from renewable sources, demonstrating the company’s commitment to decarbonisation and energy efficiency.

The focus on procuring electricity with a guarantee of renewable origin has enabled a significant reduction in emissions, totalling around 79,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, with the growing importance of the value chain in managing climate impact being particularly significant.

At the same time, the company has developed structural initiatives to improve environmental performance, including:

  • replacing the fleet with more efficient and electric solutions;
  • modernising facilities with more efficient technology (such as LED lighting);
  • digitising processes and services;
  • responsible waste management, with a recovery rate of around 70%.

This journey is also underpinned by a clear strategic vision: to establish rail transport as an essential pillar of the transition to a low-carbon economy and of territorial cohesion.

External recognition reinforces this progress, with CP’s improved ranking in the UIC Rail Sustainability Index, highlighting continuous progress in line with international best practice.

These results are a direct reflection of the commitment, professionalism and dedication of all CP staff, who continue to play an essential role in building more sustainable mobility.
