CP tests satellite tech to enhance Wi Fi service on Alfa Pendular

The project assesses the solution’s performance in a real-world commercial operating environment.

CP – Comboios de Portugal is implementing a pilot project for satellite connectivity, using Starlink technology, on one of its Alfa Pendular trains, to improve the quality of the on-board internet service during the journey, particularly in areaswith poorer mobile coverage.

This project will assess the performance of the solution in a real-world commercial operating environment to provide customers with a faster, more stable and low-latency internet connection, delivering a better digital experience on board.

“This pilot project represents yet another decisive step in the modernisation of our services, reinforcing CP’s commitment to providing its customers with a more comfortable, connected travel experience in line with current technological standards,” the Chair of CP, Pedro Moreira, said.

The solution uses satellite communication antennas to complement the current on-board communications system, which is supported by national mobile networks.

This approach aims to strengthen the internet connection in areas where mobile coverage is more limited or where the signal is weak, contributing to greater stability and continuity of communications throughout the journey.

The initial results are positive. In the initial tests, satellite technology accounted for around 19% of the total traffic on board, playing a particularly significant role on sections of the line where the terrestrial mobile network performs less well.

Throughout the trial period, technical and operational indicators will be collected to enable a more in-depth assessment of the solution’s stability, coverage levels, technical performance and the actual quality of service as perceived by customers. Based on the results, the potential for a future, larger-scale implementation across CP’s services will be assessed.

This project is part of the company’s modernisation strategy, reinforcing its commitment to innovative technological solutions that contribute to a more reliable, better-connected rail service in line with passengers’ expectations, enabling continuous improvement of the travel experience.
