Starlink test on Alfa pendular train
A pilot project using Starlink technology is testing improved connectivity on board, complementing national mobile networks.
CP has launched a pilot scheme for satellite Wi-Fi connectivity on an Alfa Pendular train, using Starlink technology, to evaluate new solutions for on-board internet access.
The solution is being tested in conjunction with the train’s existing communications system, which is supported by national mobile networks, thereby complementing the available connectivity, particularly in areas with poorer coverage or where the mobile signal is weak.
The pilot-project is expected to last 12 months and is taking place under real commercial operating conditions. During this period, technical and operational data on connection stability, coverage and service performance will be collected to support a potential future decision on its wider adoption.
Initial data analysed is positive. During the initial period of operation, Starlink accounted for around 19% of the total traffic, helping to strengthen the internet connection in areas with no coverage or a weak signal.
This forms part of CP’s technological modernisation programme and the continuous improvement of the digital customer experience, contributing to an increasingly reliable, comfortable and connected rail service.
