Record passenger numbers in 2025: over 208 million
CP carried 208.2 million passengers in 2025.
Regional and Interregional trains carried 16.4 million more passengers than in the previous year, an increase of 107.1%
CP – Comboios de Portugal carried a total of 208.2 million passengers in 2025, the highest figure this century, representing an increase of 19.9 million customers compared to 2024, which corresponds to a rise of 10.6%. These results reinforce the growing confidence of the Portuguese in rail services and highlight the company's decisive role in the country's sustainable mobility.
‘At a time when sustainability is one of the pillars of mobility policies, the results achieved in 2025 take on added importance,’ said the Chairman of the Board of Directors of CP. "Rail transport is, by nature, one of the most environmentally efficient solutions, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, lower energy consumption per passenger and a decrease in urban congestion. The growing preference of the Portuguese for rail travel represents a change in behaviour and a direct contribution to a more sustainable, balanced and environmentally responsible future," Pedro Moreira said.
The 2025 data shows that growth is particularly notable in regional and interregional trains, which recorded 16.4 million more passengers than in the previous year (from 15.3 to 31.7 million), an increase of 107.1%. Intercidades trains also saw a significant jump, with 1.8 million more passengers (from 3.6 to 5.4 million, 48.8%), while Porto's urban trains grew by around 3.8 million (from 23.9 to 27.6 million), equivalent to 15.8%, confirming the importance of these connections in the daily lives of thousands of people. Note that the reactivation of commercial passenger service on the Leixões Line contributed to increased demand for Porto Urban trains. Alfa Pendular trains also maintained very positive performance, with growing demand, highlighting the stability and attractiveness of this premium CP service.
Since its entry into force in October 2024, the Green Rail Pass has issued 780,000 subscriptions and more than 3 million reservations on Intercidades trains - of which 704,000 subscriptions and 2.7 million reservations were in 2025 - proving the strong customer uptake of this more accessible mobility option, which is in line with national decarbonisation objectives.
CP remains committed to the recovery, modernisation and replacement of rolling stock, reinforcing reliability and responsiveness throughout the territory. An example of this is the work done by maintenance teams to refurbish ARCO carriages, now also introduced on Intercidades services, which improves comfort and the travel experience and increases the availability of carriages on this service.
In addition, there is a commitment to renewing rolling stock, a decisive step towards modernising the national railway fleet and responding to the growing demand for rail travel. The first of 22 new multiple units (12 dual-mode and 10 electric), ordered from Stadler to reinforce the Regional service, is already in Portugal for technical testing and approval, representing an investment of €158 million. A contract was also signed for the acquisition of 117 new electric trains from the Alstom/DST consortium, comprising 62 units for urban services, 55 for regional services, and 36 optional units for urban services, authorised at the cabinet meeting held on 22 January 2026. In total, there are 175 new trains for urban and regional services, representing an investment of over €1.2 billion, which is the largest purchase of rolling stock in the company's history.
