The World's Best Museum

A journey that starts in 1856. This is the time to discover the National Railway Museum.

Trains have been running in Portugal since 28 October 1856. It was King Pedro V who presided over the inaugural journey between Lisbon's Santa Apolónia station and Carregado. A milestone in our history.

Did you know that the first train was built in England? And that it played a really important role for people in terms of communication? It's true!!  Important matters were communicated by the telegraph machines there were in the stations… come and discover the history of the trains of the kings and queens up until our own days.
