They say that March is one of the most romantic months of the year. Perhaps it is because this is when spring begins and that inspires romance. My parents are proof of this. They got married on 22 March 1987 and this year is going to be their 32nd anniversary. My brother and I have prepared the perfect surprise for them! We are going to take them on a trip that is older than their marriage, a tourist trip that only takes place on Saturdays in March: the famous Almond Blossom Circuit.
We have everything planned. They are leaving on a Saturday and only return after a full day of memories to remember together later.
They adore Portugal, particularly discovering it by train. They adore seeing and visiting everything this charming country has to offer and now it's time for my brother and me to surprise them with a great day out.
The Almond Blossom Circuit is a long-standing tradition and what is great is that the CP package means we can do it at a fantastic price. They are going to pass through various places and see the scenery of the hills and valleys of the north-east of the country and the Douro valley that bursts into colour at this time of year.
The journey starts from Oporto Campanhã station, but the adventure really gets under way at Celorico da Beira. There, they can choose one of two bus routes. But I am sure I know which one they'll choose!
When they stop for lunch at Meda or Vila Nova de Foz Côa, they are sure to try some of the best cuisine the north has to offer with the unique hospitality of this part of Portugal. The trip continues in the afternoon and only ends at the beautiful Foz Côa or Almeida.
They can't imagine the surprise that is waiting for them! I'm sure they are going to love it and want to return.
There is nothing like visiting this area and travelling round the twisty mountain roads at a time of year when the almond trees are in flower and fill the air with the sweet perfume that announces springtime has arrives.
