CP's Historical Christmas Train Lights Up the Way Between Porto and Ermesinde

CP - Comboios de Portugal, in partnership with Valongo City Council, is offering a unique Christmas experience: the Historical Christmas Train. This train, comprised of a steam locomotive that is almost 100 years old and historical carriages, will be adorned with twinkling lights to run between São Bento station in Porto and Ermesinde station in Valongo.

Christmas celebration on rails

This festive journey promises to delight adults and children alike, combining the magic of Christmas with the rich heritage of the railway. Journeys are scheduled for 16, 17, 23 and 30 December 2023, as well as 6 and 7 January 2024.

Train times and entertainment

The Historical Christmas Train will depart four times a day at he following time:

  • From Porto - São Bento at 15.03 and 19.55;
  • From Ermesinde at 16.40 and 21.25.


Each journey will be brightened up with special entertainment and typical Valongo sweets, providing unforgettable moments on board.

Experience in Ermesinde

At Ermesinde station, passengers will have the opportunity to visit the Christmas Village and the largest Christmas Tree in the country, according to the Valongo local authority.

Ticket details

Tickets cost €10 for adults and €5 for children aged between 4 and 12. In addition, the tickets allow free access to the Porto Urban Trains on the day of the journey. The train can carry 254 passengers.

Historical Train

The Historical Christmas Trainis full of history and tradition:

  • Steam locomotive 0186, built in 1925 by Henschel & Sohn in Germany;
  • Historical ACDt 484 and ACDt 481 carriages, produced by Nicaise&Delcuve in Belgium;
  • Historical carriages CTF 5511, CTF 5513 and CTF 2282, built in Portugal.
