Free passes for pupils and students

Sub 18 and Estudante Sub 23

Pupils and students aged 4 up to and including 23 can get a free pass for use on CP urban trains (Porto, Coimbra and Lisbon) and regional services.
This also applies to students up to the age of 24 on integrated study programmes, such as Architecture and Urbanism, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine.
Although free of charge, the pass for young students must be topped-up every month.

 

CP Services: Lisbon urban trains | Porto urban trains | Coimbra urban trains | Regional and InterRegional

  • Pupils aged 4 to 18 (until the last day of the month in which they turn 19).
  • Students aged 19 to 23 (until the last day of the month in which they turn 24).
  • Higher education students up to and including the age of 24, attending courses with an integrated study cycle, namely Architecture and Urbanism, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medicine, Dental Medicine and Veterinary Medicine.

Each young person can only apply for one free pass, and cannot benefit from more than one pass at the same time for:

  • a Metropolitan Area
  • an Intermunicipal Community;
  • a Metropolitan Area adjoining an Intermunicipal Community or two adjoining Intermunicipal Communities, proving that they live and study in neighbouring regions.

New users must apply for a card, paying the cost of the card and present the following documents:

Lisbon Urban Trains

Go to a CP ticket office with the necessary documentation to request the card.

Once the documents have been submitted, the card will be issued within 10 working days.

Urgent requests can only be made at Lisbon Santa Apolónia Station on working days from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.. The card will be delivered within 24 hours, on the working day following the request.

For renewals and changes to the card's profile, go to the Customer Assistance Offices in Rossio or Cais do Sodré.

  • Presentation of identification document: Identity Card/Citizen Card, Passport or Residence Permit.
  • 1 original colour passport photo.
  • Fill in the Card Application Form.
  • From 4 to 18 years old - No declaration of enrolment at a school required.
  • 19 to 24 year olds - Proof of enrolment at a national educational establishment, valid for the current school year.

If you use the Lisbon Metropolitan Area adjacent to an Intermunicipal Community, you must submit:

  • Proof of habitual residence (can be obtained from the Tax Authority portal),
  • Proof of enrolment in a national education unit, valid for the current school year.

List of CIM (Intermunicipal communities) and AM (Metropolitan Areas)

Foreign citizens who do not have a Portuguese NIF (tax identification number) must request it from the Tax Authority. Without this information we cannot issue the card.

Porto Urban Trains

Go to a CP ticket office.

The card will be issued as soon as the documents are handed in. It is delivered within 48 hours of the request.

  • Presentation of identification document: Identity Card/Citizen Card, Passport or Residence Permit.
  • 1 original colour passport photo (If you have a citizen's card, it may be possible to download the photo from it).
  • From 4 to 18 years old - No declaration of enrolment at a school required.
  • 19 to 24 year olds - Proof of enrolment at a national educational establishment, valid for the current school year.

If you use the Porto Metropolitan Area adjacent to an Intermunicipal Community, you must submit:

  • Proof of habitual residence (can be obtained from the Tax Authority portal),
  • Proof of enrolment in a national education unit, valid for the current school year.

Porto Urban Trains - Go to the point of sale.

Coimbra Urban, Regional and InterRegional Trains - Go to the point of sale.

The card will be valid for a maximum of 4 years, until the end of the month in which you turn 19 (if you are a student up to and including the age of 18) or 24 (if you are a higher education student).

To have access to the free Under 18+TP / Under 23+TP Student monthly pass, you must top it up at a CP ticket office, upon presentation of the corresponding card.

Every year, from the start of the new school year, beneficiaries of the free Under 23+TP Student ticket must present a new proof of enrolment at a national educational unit in order to renew their right to the free ticket.

Lisbon Urban Trains:

  • If you continue to be a beneficiary, you must renew your card profile at the Customer Assistance Offices in Rossio or Cais do Sodré stations, by submitting proof of enrolment in an educational unit.

Porto urban trains:

  • If you continue to be a beneficiary, renewal of the card profile must be carried out at a station selling Port urban train products, by handing in proof of enrolment at an education unit.
  • If there is a change of profile, the Card will be updated upon delivery of the relevant supporting documents.

Coimbra Urban and Regional Trains:

  • If you continue to be a beneficiary, the renewal of the card profile must be carried out at a CP ticket office, by handing in proof of enrolment in an education unit.
  • If there is a change of profile, the Card will be updated by handing in the relevant supporting documents.

If you no longer benefit from the free student pass (Under 18+TP / Student Under 23+TP), you can get a Youth Pass by applying for a new card.
