Valongo town hall, in collaboration with CP - Comboios de Portugal, has refurbished historical steam locomotive number E201, which has been strategically placed next to Ermesinde Station to pay tribute to the socio-economic importance of rail workers and the railway in the town’s history.
During the 16 July inauguration ceremony, attended by the chairman of CP, Pedro Moreira, the local mayor, José Manuel Ribeiro, said, " Valongo, and Ermesinde in particular, are inseparable from the history of Portugal’s railways. Over time, many rail workers chose to settle here with their families, especially in Ermesinde. Former rail workers asked Valongo to refurbish this engine to pay tribute to the many generations from Valongo who helped write the extraordinary history of the Portuguese railways".
Pedro Moreira thanked Valongo for its recognition of so many railway workers. He recalled the advantages of trains and the railway as instruments of territorial cohesion and extreme importance for environmental sustainability.
