The first of 22 new trains arrives in Portugal
Scheduled to undergo technical testing and approval processes.
CP – Comboios de Portugal said on Thursday that the first of 22 new regional trains ordered from Swiss manufacturer Stadler has arrived in the country, marking a decisive step in the modernisation of the national railway fleet.
This is an investment of €158 million, including 12 dual-mode multiple units (with electric and diesel traction) and 10 electric railcars for regional service. The new FLIRT trains stand out for their energy efficiency and can reach a maximum speed of 160 kilometres per hour.
This first unit is dual-mode and has a capacity of 369 passengers (204 seated and 165 standing under normal load), including areas for people with reduced mobility and for bicycles. The trains will be equipped with Wi-Fi and sockets for charging electronic devices.
Technical testing and approval processes will now follow to ensure total safety and compliance with the national railway infrastructure. The delivery of the first multiple units to CP is scheduled for the second half of 2026.
With this acquisition, CP reinforces its sustainable mobility strategy, responding to the growing demand for rail transport and contributing to energy transition and territorial cohesion.
‘The arrival of this first Stadler train is a historic milestone for CP and for the country. These new units will significantly improve the quality of regional service, offering more comfort, reliability and sustainability to our customers,’ said Pedro Moreira, Chairman of the Board of Directors of CP – Comboios de Portugal.
The 22 multiple units, 12 dual-mode and 10 electric (the latter acquired under the Climate Action and Sustainability Programme - PACS) will be part of CP's 2700 series.
