Over 150 years preparing the future
The first ever railway journey in Portugal took place on 28 October 1856 between Lisbon and Carregado before being expanded across the whole country.
The railway first in Portugal appeared as a private undertaking. Both private and state companies operated side by side for a long time until they were all amalgamated in 1951 into the Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses.
Therewas a major shake-up in the railways in 1997. CP was put in charge of the railway operations while REFER - Rede Ferroviária Nacional, EP took over as infrastructure manager.
The Fundação Nacional do Museu Ferroviário was set up in 2005 to oversee the preservation of the historical and cultural legacy of the railways in Portugal and was given the job of setting up and running the National Railway Museum.
The Council of Ministers approved a decree-law on 16 April 2009, changing the articles of association and the name of the company to Comboios de Portugal, CP, E.P.E. in line with the new legal regime for State companies and authorised the spin-off of the freight service. The alterations also included changes to the company's social objective.
